Progress Reports on the Core Rules

Alternate Worlds Publication is dedicated to the Alternate Worlds Role-Playing Game.

AWRPG is a skill-based D20 system completely unlike anything before it... more or less. In fact the system is a synergy that results from decades of game-play, and endeavors to be simple, quick, organic, intuitive and easily learned. It is a highly customizable Core System that will support any genre or playing style. And it does this inexpensively.

When I first started gaming there were many wonderful games available that were inexpensive and fun to play. The rules did not take up the bookshelf, nor did you have to have a law degree to make a suggestion that something should be different. But more importantly, the companies involved did not attempt to find some way to rehash the same information a thousand times and resell it for hundreds of dollars to each person buying the game.

It is out of that experience that I have decided to reinvigorate the role-playing scene.
Alternate Worlds Role-Playing Game is not a world shattering innovation, simply the next step in evolution. The five-legged toad with 9 eyes has reached its conclusion, and now is the time for the four-legged toad with 2 eyes to reassert itself.

We intended to do just that.

While other games will tout that they are "quick, enjoyable, and vigorous" we will instead promise to be simple, easy, and unobtrusive while remaining easy on the bankroll.

I hope the products we produce are ones you look forward to seeing.

Well, it has been a busy couple of weeks, and I am trying to get everything together. The core rules are coming along fine, but I keep hitting issues. I am going to reorganize my plans for the book and reassemble it bow rather than wait to see. This will slow up the game a little bit right now, but I believe it will save a lot of time later.

Two of the supplements are coming along fast, and I might wait to publish the main book till I have some of them done. One idea was that the game should wait till all 5 of the settings are done, I am unsure how I feel about that, but as I was the one who suggested it everyone is just looking at me! LOL

I know there will be the ubiquitous Fantasy setting, but we are working very hard to build something new in feel, though that is hard to do when there are so many out there!

There is a Historofantasy™ Japanese setting, and a Chinese setting that is directly tied to it. There is a Post-Holocaust setting and a Space setting. And I am trying to decide if I want to go with a Techno-Magic setting or a Horror setting... one of the designers suggested that I do a Old West setting.

So some of these will be examined and decided upon at some point soon.

The first of the Skill Lists is completed. This is the "pared down" list for one of the settings in which most of the other skills are not needed.

It has been a long hard week of skill design and research, but I think it is going very well. The next step is to re-evaluate the skill list and begin the "Master List."

The fantasy setting is moving along, thanks to the other designers, and the artwork is starting to get organized in concept. It won't be long from the looks of things till the page layout begins on one of the setting books, and not long after the core rules.

There is some discussion on how the final product(s) will be published. It will definitely be done as book(s) but hard or soft bound is still the discussion. PDFs will be released either concurrently or 60 days later. That is still being debated.

Well, there is the update.

The master list of skills is done. It needs to be used to play test it and fine tune it, but it is looking very good.

Come up with some interesting rules I am looking forward to trying out.

Generally, the game is going well, and is more or less on schedule.

Now, to some art and prep for layout of some of the pages.

Well, spent the last couple of weeks being very sick, and did not get much done. The other contributors have fallen by the way side (as they are want to do on a project this big) so I am flying solo... this will cause the game to take longer to get it done, but will require less rewrites.

The Japanese Setting is going nicely, and the others are on hold for a bit. All-in-all, what with being sick and everything, it is going well.

After some months of personal and financial setbacks I ended up having to move my server. This led me to redesign the site from the ground up. While the forums have remained intact and untouched the same can not be said for the designers. It has been a hard time for us all, and we are now down to just me working on all of the books alone.

While I am attempting to be diligent in my work I am facing increased work loads due to my financial situation (something I am sure everyone reading this understands too well), and developing computer issues (either a faulty motherboard or drive… still working on fixing it). And now the cold and flu season is on us… I know, I have one! LOL

But, I am a long way from slacking off… it is just going to take some time to “get this party started.”

I have had the opportunity to review the game-play of damage and decided to rework it. It looks good, but now I have to convert the weapons and rules for the new method.

Also had a chance to perform a one-off game session of some of the rules. Went very well from a GM perspective. I think the players did well. The one area that is concerning me right now is how the system handles modifying die rolls. The players, all experienced in a different system, had small issues with it. I think that had more to do with a lack of familiarity rather than a system fault.

I am working toward a fix of the rules so we can do a more protracted story with more activity, including heavy combat.

Writing has been going well, even though life has been rough. This is why I have been slow to post progress reports; because it has been slow going at times, and outside of the design process it has been hectic.

The first two chapters are done and the next three are progressing nicely. There have been some re-works and some additions. The problem has been trying to balance the characters and the vehicles. But, I think I have a handle of the issue, so it is going nicely.

I have also done more work on one of the Genre Books, and that has taken some time out of the Core Book. But it has been worth it.

I am also down to just me working as life has interfered with the other members of the Design Team. But, that is the fun of doing this kind of endeavor... the adventure of it all!
